Clay vs ceramic vs stoneware

All ceramics begin as clay — the differences come down to firing temperature, finishing, and how the piece is intended to be used. Raw clay or low-fire clay (under 1,000°C) retains earthen character, porous surfaces, and decorative-only function. Earthenware (around 1,150°C) is fired enough to hold form but remains porous. Stoneware (1,200-1,300°C) vitrifies into a non-porous, durable body suitable for daily use (oven-safe, dishwasher-safe). Porcelain (above 1,300°C) is the most refined and least textural.
